Victor Otero

Bio

My name is Victor and I was born in East Harlem, New York City. I was born to a loving mother and a father that I have been reconnecting with since 21. I’ve always worked in fields that informed and helped disadvantaged folx of color because I always felt that inequities should not be allowed to exist under the guise of equality.

Photography was introduced to me in high school as an elective and in some ways it’s always been a part of me like an organ. The first time I felt empowered was when I wrote for my college newspaper. That led me to meeting other photographers who helped me understand the technicalities. Since then, I always created photography to shed light on Black, Indigenous, Person’s of Color in America because when I started taking photos professionally, professional photography was in a stage that wasn’t inclusive.

Since then, I’ve shifted my focus on narrative based photographic pieces. I’ve challenged myself and commissioned fellow artists to help bring my visions to life. In 2023, Hudson Park Library sponsored my breakout series “The Twilight Series” and showcased it on the New York Public Library’s website and that same series toured galleries in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, London and Glasgow. It helped me build confidence and since then, I have evolved my thinking on how I approach and capture perspectives.

Artist Statement

Victor understands the power of empathy. Photography can teach you how to empathize by allowing you to see another’s perspective. Having taken many steps to capture the essence of memories, Victor understands how precious capturing a moment means for other people. Victor takes time to refine his craft because he is a believer of repetition and treats every shot like an exercise. He tries and tries because in order to believe in yourself you must bring the visions in your dreams to light; to reality. Stepping outside of his comfort zone, he wanted to utilize his camera in order to capture nature in a way that conveys humanity. He leaves you with a chance to experience Kyoto, Japan and Sedona, Arizona through his eyes. In both places, he was surrounded by mountainous terrain. In reflection, mountains are places that bring Victor at peace and help him feel in awe at the world. Being from New York City, everyone can feel on top of the world but there is nothing like actually being there through a Mountain View.
