Artist Statement
The “Omicron Drawings” began as a response to the Omicron wave of the COVID pandemic in December 2021. In an attempt to ground myself in the present moment and soothe my frayed nervous system, I committed myself to a daily drawing practice. These drawings are created freehand with pen and ink without any drafting or preliminary sketches, and thus represent an exercise in both control (of movement) and surrender (to myriad unpredictable outcomes). My experience of this tension—between focused physical control and willing psychological surrender—evokes a “flow” state, in which I am completely absorbed in the process of creation. What is most exciting about these drawings is that this “flow” is manifest in the dynamic movement of the work itself and is also transferred to the viewer, who may experience the work as both visually engaging and psychically soothing.
